Someone asked this. It’s about privacy and videotaping, so I wanted to know too?

Cynthia asked:
is there anything illegal about someone secretly videotaping you on YOUR property when they are on THEIR property and then posting it online? like are their privacy laws or posting stuff online laws or ANYTHING? probably not, but i hope there are.

Probably not the actual taping but posting it online without your consent since you’re the subject of the video. Call your police department and ask about it. Internet law is developing but many police still don’t know exactly what to do about it.
If the person is on his own property he can legally videotape anything he can see. He then owns the copyright to that video, and can post it anywhere he wants.
If he benefits financially from the use of your likeness, you can seek a reasonable fee for the use, but you can’t prevent it being distributed or posted.

Even if it’s his property, that’s illegal surveillance, and is against the law, akin to stalking. You can get the video tapes destroyed by the police, and I’d file a restraining order against him.
Probably has a closet full of tapes of other people too…
It depends on the intent of the person video taping. Are they doing the video taping as part of their security system by providing surveillance? If so, then you don’t have a case. However, if this person is purposely video taping you regardless of the purpose they can be held liable. Just like recording a phone conversation, it cannot be done without the knowledge of the other person.
yes it could be illegal, only if it gets worse and then contact the police they could be sentence to jail
California has laws about this that are designed to protect entertainers from paparazzi. But the laws vary from state to state and other states may have no restrictions at all.
EDIT - CA’s laws are part of its anti-stalking laws and prohibit things like using a zoom lens to film or photo from one property to another.
